Dr. Mawya Shocair, MD

Mawya Shocair, MD, FACP, FNKF is a renowned nephrologist and primary care physician with decades of experience caring for the Waltham community. Dr. Shocair and her husband, esteemed internist and pulmonologist Dr. Mohammad Reda, ran Waltham Medical Group where they practiced both primary care and their respective specialties. Dr. Shocair and Dr. Reda have been celebrated for their clinical expertise, compassion for their patients, and outstanding patient care.
Dr. Shocair earned her medical degree from Damascus University College of Medicine where she graduated on the Honors List. She trained at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (Brigham and Women's Hospital) where she completed a nephrology fellowship, and she was a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Shocair is Double Board-Certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. In 1989, she was certified by the American College of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Board. In addition to having worked in private practice, Dr. Shocair served as Chief of Nephrology and Director of the Dialysis Unit at Waltham Hospital for over twenty years. Also at Waltham Hospital, she held multiple leadership positions including President of Medical Staff and Chair of the Executive Committee of Medical Staff.
Currently, Dr. Shocair is the Medical Director of the Dialysis Center in Waltham and a staff nephrologist at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Beyond her clinical roles, Dr. Shocair serves as the Medical Advisory Board Chair of the National Kidney Foundation's New England Chapter. She was formerly President of the Charles River District of the Massachusetts Medical Society and is currently a delegate of the MMS Suffolk District, serving on the Committee on the Sustainability of Private Practice and the Committee on Medical Education. Dr. Shocair has ample experience teaching medical students and rounding with medical residents. She is a Clinical Associate Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine and previously held academic appointments at Harvard Medical School and Boston University School of Medicine.
Dr. Shocair is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the National Kidney Foundation. She is a member of the American Society of Nephrology and the International Society of Nephrology. Dr. Shocair's special interests include chronic kidney disease, hypertension, and cardiorenal syndrome, as well as hypnosis therapy for smoking cessation.
